A selection of not-quite-mainstream works of fantasy and horror, this list includes Rintaro's great anime reworking of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, as well as the steampunk masterpiece The City of Lost Children. The award-winning ghost stories in Kobayashi's Kwaidan provide some stylized horror, and Tod Browning's Freaks offers an unsettling early vision of the carnivalesque.
