The Jewish Image in American Film by JHVC 11 films

Since the silent era, movies have addressed a wide array of Jewish characters and themes. Drawing on a selection of outstanding works from 1925 to today, The Jewish Image in American Film explores not just what the films say about Jewish life and culture, but what they reveal about the society that created them.

This list is drawn from a Jewish Heritage Video Collection course created by Lester D. Friedman. The course and discussion are available at http://www.jhvc.org/courses/index.php?url=jim.html.

Lester D. Friedman, professor of humanities at the SUNY Health Science Center and of cinema studies at Syracuse University, is the author of The Jewish Image in American Film, coauthor of American-Jewish Filmmakers: Traditions and Trends, and editor of Unspeakable Images: Ethnicity and the American Cinema.
