Susan Mogul's WOMAN'S BUILDING

by Reframe | 1 posts

The Seventies were a momentous decade filled with protests, demands for rights and policy shifts - the artworld was no exception.

The Woman's Building was founded in Los Angeles in 1973.  The artworld, the major museums and galleries, had largely excluded or marginalized the work of women.  Just as women were marching in the streets, during this time, demanding equal treatment in the workplace and access to the seats of government, women artists were fighting back against an entrenched establishment and demanding that their work be taken seriously.  Susan Mogul's work contributed to that fight in the '70s and it is therefore fitting that she has been commissioned by the Otis College of Art and Design to create WOMAN'S BUILDING as part of the upcoming exhibition, Doin' It in Public: Feminism and Art at the Woman's Building October 1 - December 3, 2011.  Enjoy her tribute to this edifice and the movement it housed and be sure to check out her other works at Reframe Collection.

Susan is currently working on a longform project about the west coast feminist movement.  To learn more and to support her efforts be sure to visit her website: www.susanmogul.com.
