Reviewers don’t always get your point. Sometimes it’s your filmmaking fault, other times it is the limitation of the critic, but this time I guess it was a win win. I made the film a few years ago, but never found a home for it in NYC where it belonged. The local PBS station had aired a program on tango the year before and wasn’t interested. But this year, NYC/TV revamped the city owned Ch. 25 to do local programming about NYC and we made a match. I was happy to help launch a much-needed outlet for local filmmakers and they were thrilled to tap into such a vibrant tango community. I got a bit of fan mail from that I’d like to share:
Wow! Congratulations! Great review and he even got your major point
that, "the arts can work their way into our souls, elevate us and
become profoundly gratifying"! Who is this guy?
I particularly enjoyed the comments about advancing in levels and reaching plateaus, feeling as though you're doing well only to discover later that you still have so much to learn. That was right on the money. I was impressed by how you were able to elicit such thoughtful commentary from all of the participants. You encouraged everyone to "bring their A-game" to the production. That's a testament not only to your skill as a director but also to your open and honest personality and ultimately to your genuine love of the subject. Thanks for this delightful synopsis of the New York tango experience. Surrender Tango is a gem. Like a great night of dancing, it was enjoyable, meaningful, memorable, and it never took itself too seriously.
What a beautiful film… and how well you choose the cast of characters. And the filming—slow motion –talking and action beautifully synchronized. You, Joe and Diane and everyone spoke so simply and so well and with feeling. And no superficiality! Mariela and Jorge were divine in so many ways!
